The Campaign is over
It’s been a super busy couple of months in my community work role this spring. One of the most inspiring engagements was on the campaign team of Reinette Senum who ran for Nevada City. There were four candidates running for three seats. Our goal was for her to get “top votes” (the most votes of all four) which she did. After months of weekly meetings (which were a pleasure to attend because of the most absolutely awesome, dedicated, reliable team I could ever hope to work with): we finally reached the election on Tuesday the 3rd. That’s the cool thing about a campaign, ’tis very clear when you are done!
Here’s a shot from our election party when Reinette called us up for a big “thank you”:
That’s me on the left then Paul Matson (in back), Tania Carlone, Cathy Colvin, Kim Milligan, Reinette Senum speaking, and not shown is Kanui whose last name I don’t know.
What can I say but that I’m thrilled to have been on the team and am super thrilled not to be looking forward to hundreds of hours of city council meetings… Bad, I know, but it’s the truth.
On top of the campaign, I’m still vice-chair of the Nevada City Downtown Association (NCDA), the organization that launched the effort to begin a Nevada City Farmers Market. A couple of months into the process it became clear to us that it’d be better off for everyone if the market coordinators formed their own association to run the market–basically detaching from the NCDA.
Being the organizational structuralist, I got to find out about the different legal structures available. I was hoping we wouldn’t have to go through the lengthy process of incorporating. Turns out that there is an Unincorporated Nonprofit Association designation that suits our needs perfectly. We’ll still need to file with the state and the IRS and fill out the tax-exempt applications, as far as I can tell, though I’ll do a little more research (hoping I’m wrong).
