Focus on the destination, not the pitfalls

This morning at Toastmasters, one of the speakers emphasized the importance of this concept when mountain biking:
focus on where you want to go and not on what you want to avoid.

Yes! A wonderful concept for so much more than mountain biking! It gets right to the point of creating what you want. I see it as by-passing an over-active mind that thinks it knows best, whether it does or not. We can be so resourceful when we aren’t micro-managing every little action.

Keeping our sights on the destination allows for success in ways we’ve never dreamed of.

      It can also lead to the quagmire in Iraq.

      Hi Anna,

      I’d argue that the quagmire in Iraq has been exacerbated by over-active minds that aren’t focused on a heartfelt destination. I didn’t write “heartfelt” in my post–thanks for reminding me that it isn’t necessarily a given.

      I dunno Shawn…some people have oily hearts.
      :-}

      The other way to metaphorize(?) it is reins vs. spurs, when managing your equine energies - if you’re too busy focusing on what to avoid, you’ll be sawing at the poor horse’s mouth, hindering the poor beast’s forward motion.

      had a manager like that once. drove me crazy.
