Simplifying the minute-taking beast of all beasts

Here is the simplifying adventure of the day that put me on cloud 9 for the next 14 hours (until now and still counting).

I’ve mentioned that we are starting a Saturday Farmers Market here in Nevada City. Seeing as none of us on the planning committee have ever begun a market before, we’re figuring things out as we go along. We know it’s going to take beaucoup hours of volunteer (which we all are) time leading up to June 28th, the first Saturday.

We meet once a week to keep on track, encourage each other, hash out decisions, create policy and so forth. For some odd and totally unfair reason, I’ve become the note taker–and I can assure you, it’s not from my own sense of charitable good will.

I think my negative attitude toward minute taking comes from the feeling that the meetings are fun–good people, great energy, awesome goal–but the post-meeting, type-up-notes, wrap up details part afterwards isn’t so fun.

Then there was the schedule for the day. Let’s just say today was dedicated to community (and some plantings of a red and pink mystery flower and a yellow squash in the yard). From Toastmasters (breakfast), to farmers market planning meeting, to Reinette’s campaign meeting (lunch), to Downtown Association Board meeting (dinner)–where the heck is dessert??–I felt a little heaviness before the day began thinking about typing up the notes in between meetings.

However. My coffee at Toastmasters must have been laced with a splash of the smart gene. I took the ole second brain (Mac laptop) to the farmers market meeting and typed the minutes as we went through each item. The meeting finished at 9:40, I emailed out the minutes at 9:50.

booya !!!!!!

Is all I’ve got to say.

The thought of taking minutes next week, doesn’t sound so bad now.

‘Tis truly amazing how strong of an effect the thought of something you don’t want to do can have on you, eh?
