Jott trial update

When I was in the Yosemite area, I tried signing up for Jott, the phone to email message/transcription service. Even though I had wireless and phone service, I wasn’t able to complete registration for some mysterious reason.

Once home, I completed registration without any trouble whatsoever. I called the 800# from my cell phone to send my first Jott. The recorded voice asked, “Who do you want to Jott?” I answered, “myself”. Then promptly drew a blank on something to say. “This is my first test Jott.” Wow. Profound. Not.

I tried another one. “Who do you want to Jott?” “Myself” then, “Call Mark.” Another recorded voice immediately jumped on me to exclaim “I do not understand”. “Call Mark” “I do not understand.”

This call and response repeated 5 times until I was ready to do something drastic with my phone. For the same reason that limitless phone navigation trees can illicit unreasonable responses from otherwise patient human beings, hearing “I do not understand” after something so simple was rather frustrating. Funny thing is that when I got home, there was, in fact, a Jott email waiting for me that reported: “Call Mark.” Minor glitch in the system perhaps?

After another successful usage the other day, I was feeling amenable to the service. Until today. I still haven’t receive the email message from a Jott I sent over 12 hours ago. Hmmm. “I do not understand.”

I’ll try it a few more times. Unreliable messages will definitely put a damper on my enthusiasm. Right now, I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt–user error? one-time glitch? I’ll let you know what I think.

Hi there, saw your blog post and wanted to respond so we get your Jotts doing what you want them to! When you call and say “myself” our system does not repeat a name back to you, you can simply begin your recording after the beep. This is why you received a Jott to “Call Mark”, because it thought that is what you wanted transcribed. If when you ask the voice asks, “Who do you want to Jott” and you say the name of one of your contacts, it will repeat it back to you to make sure it has the right one. Hope this helps! If you ever have any questions or trouble, please don’t hesitate to write to feedback@jott.com, and I’d be happy to help!

Thanks for the info, Kate. I see that my example was a little confusing–my Jott was, in fact, a reminder to myself to “Call Mark”. I didn’t intend for that to be a command.

I did notice that I speak right after the beep when I Jott to “myself”. I appreciate that quick sequence (and that I don’t have to wait for a recorded voice to say, “record after the beep” or some such).

No problem! I’m always here to answer questions or help if you need them.

Actually, thanks to feedback we’ve decided to put the “Myself” voice prompt back in action. So starting tomorrow when you Jott yourself it will respond and say “Jott to self” so you know it heard correctly. Sorry to flip flop like that on you, but we’ve discovered that this is just easier for folks, so we’re going to go back to doing it that way and hopefully clear up some confusion.

If you think of anything that would make Jott an easier service for you, or more helpful in your daily life, please don’t hesitate to let us know! We are always working on improving and we love to hear suggestions.

“O” used to stand for “operator.”

Now it stands for “opt out of giving good service with a real human.”

I just sent my first Jott about a week ago. The system worked fine for me, although I spoke the message “take down e-course from my site and from Clickbank”, and it e-mailed me “take down e-course from my site and Quebec(?) - I guess the question mark indicated that the robot knew the transcription was wrong. :-)

I’m enjoying your blog. Kalia turned me on to it!
